Info for Foreign Nurses
Jumping in to help ease the US nursing shortage is not easy for foreign-educated nuses. Though the US has relied on this group since World War II to fill in gaps in the domestic labor supply, foreign nurses must comply with strict requirements to work in this counrty. They need a license to practice and a visa that permits them to work.
According to the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) in Philadelphia, which ensures licensure eligibility and other US practice requirements for foreign-educated healthcare professionals, nurses from the Philippines, India, and Nigeria rank as the top three among the largest percentage of CGFNS applicants, respectively (Nurses from Canada and Mexico, who rank 4th and 15th with CGFNS, follow the North American Free Trade Agreement requirements, which are not included here).
The chart below gives an overview of the basic steps foreign-educated nurses must take in order to enter the US job market.
